Our Place is looking for a VP of Engineering to lead our customer-facing technology group, either remotely or at our offices in LA. 

In this role, reporting directly to the CoFounder and Co-CEO, you will help shape our internal technology function and shape the long term technical strategy while serving as a leader within Our Place and modeling our core values  

As our first VP of Engineering and most senior technical executive, you will lead own Our Place’s current Shopify codebase and lead the future state of our ecommerce platform globally. You may also oversee data engineering in partnership with the data team. You will be a thought-partner to the operations and marketing teams for their technology and engineering needs and help build the systems that support all areas of the business. 

You will build the team, enable data-informed decision-making, and streamline the functioning of a high-tempo e-commerce operation. Primary stakeholders are the CEOs, VP of Ops,  SVP Growth,Digital Product, Data Scientist and Director of CX. 

Our ideal candidate will have several years of experience managing engineers, recruiting and retaining technical talent, have strong consumer facing industry experience and have strong background in software architecture, data engineering, performance driven code, metrics, quarterly roadmaps, tools selection and competitive analysis.  

When you’re not cooking up a storm with loved ones, this is what you’ll do:

  • Own Our Place’s current Shopify codebase and lead what the future state of our ecommerce platform should be.
  • Help implement and maintain web analytics platform in partnership with our data team.
  • Own pixel implementation and QA
  • Ownership of sprints and deadlines – make sure that task/project scoping and deliverables are clear and projects are prioritized with stakeholder input
  • Be a thought partner with the analytics team to evaluate long-term infrastructure projects, like an A/B testing engine, eCommerce platform in 2022
  • Own high level strategy and roadmaps for technology atOurPlace
  • Build our front-end teams to tackle the challenges of a fast moving, modern e-commerce business
  • Develop the customer tech strategy and roadmap to deliver on Our Place’s strategic goals; lead the goal planning process for the group, in collaboration with the Digital Product team.

    • Partnering with marketing technology
    • Data, with a focus on customer data, may fall under the scope of this position
  • Partner with Marketing and eCommerce to create, evaluate, and execute on opportunities to continuously evolve and develop the way we connect with our customers through FromOurPlace.com
  • Partner with the marketing team leads to streamline tools and processes to optimize how we leverage third party vendors and home-grown tools to achieve our goals, typically in the broad domains of new customer acquisition, retention, repeat behavior optimization, etc. 
  • As the top-level leader within the tech organization, you will be looking for opportunities to sharpen OurPlace’s omnichannel business capabilities, with your colleagues on the (fill in blanks).  
  • Provide leadership, direction, and mentoring to direct reports and the broader Engineering team in an agile environment
  • Partner with the People Team to build a diverse pipeline of engineers and people managers to serve Our Place’s future talent needs
  • Supervise ongoing architecture evolution in a modern internet setup (React-based front end
  • Ensure that page speed KPIs and other customer-experience metrics are designed properly and are being used to measure and govern tech work in a way that makes sense for the business.

Our dream candidate has…

  • Proven Director/VP Level Leadership experience at a 100M revenue+ E-Commerce brand, preferably direct retail (D2C) vs. CPG
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 5 years in managing teams
  • Significant experience building, managing, and motivating engineering organizations, ideally of 25+ people
  • Strong understanding of how to design an effective engineering organization and its workstreams
  • Has empathy for the value of continuous deployment and long-term stability


  • Has experience building teams and leveraging outside resources
  • Has a degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience
  • Has a deep understanding of software engineering, browsers and modern tooling
  • Is experienced in recruiting, hiring, and leading effective software teams
  • Has a sturdy technical foundation and was a software engineer working on front-end/full-stack projects in their past career
